Cosmo Hospital has a state of the art urology setup equipped with the latest equipments. We undertake all kinds of minimally invasive procedures for treatment of kidney stones, prostate problems, cancers of kidney, urinary bladder, prostate and male genital organs.
- Kidney Stones
Stone formation in kidney is a common problem in this part of the country. This is mainly related to low water intake especially in summers. Stones may form silently in the kidney till they are of substantial size to cause symptoms. For small stones, the treatment can be done without any surgery by a procedure called “Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy (ESWL)” or simply “Lithotripsy”. This procedure can be done without admission to the hospital and patient can return home the same day. However, for large and hard stones, the treatment of choice is a minimal invasive surgery or key-hole surgery called “Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL)”. This procedure involves making of a tunnel from skin down into the kidney under anaesthesia and then removing the stone from the kidney by breaking them up using a nephroscope. The hospital stay is for 2 to 3 days and return to work takes about a week. Your urologist will decide the kind of treatment most suited for you. - Ureteric Stones
Stones forming in the kidney can sometimes slip down into the ureter (it is the pipe connecting the kidney to the urinary bladder). Such stones can cause severe pain called as ureteric colic. Patients with acute pain in the flank usually present in the emergency. Stones of size 3 to 5 mm and lying in the lower ureter usually pass out on their own or with medications. Stones larger than 6 mm or lying higher up in the ureter or those associated with infection require removal. Stones in ureter are removed by doing a procedure called as ureteroscopy. Here, an endoscope is passed through the natural urinary passage and the stone fragmented and removed. No cuts on the skin are involved. Following this surgery, your urologist may place a stent to allow healing in the region of impacted stone. The stent is removed as an out-patient procedure using a cystoscope. - Bladder Stones
Stones can form in the urinary bladder mostly as a result of infection. The incidence is higher in men especially in elderly age group where prostate enlargement is common. Such stones are also treated using minimal invasive methods without any cuts on the skin in most cases. - Prostate Enlargement
Prostate is a walnut shaped organ situated below the urinary bladder. Benign prostate enlargement is seen in all men above the age of 50 years. However, only about 50% will eventually develop symptoms of this disease. The prostate enlargement is hormone related. As the prostate enlarges, it compresses and chokes the urethra (urinary passage) that runs through it. This results in poor flow of urine and the bladder also becomes overactive due to excessive resistance it has to work against. The common symptoms of prostate enlargement include frequency of urination especially in the night, decreased flow, straining to pass urine, urgency to pass urine and sensation of incomplete bladder evacuation.Treatment of benign prostate enlargement in early stages is medical. But for advanced disease or where medicines are not effective, one of the minimal invasive techniques is utilized. Transurethral resection of Prostate (TURP) is the most effective technique available with us where the enlarged part of prostate gland is removed using an endoscope. It doesn’t involve any cuts or incisions. The decision about what treatment will be suitable in each case is best left to the treating urologist.
